Coconut Chips: a hidden superfood?

Over the last decade coconuts chips have become popularised due to their taste, increased accessibility, and marketed health benefits. Whilst many may argue that their marketed health benefits are false; on the contrary, I believe that, when eaten in moderation, they offer a range of nutrients and health benefits. These tasty treats should be in every household’s kitchen, not convinced yet?

Let’s dive deeper and look at why coconut chips are the ultimate superfood!

Do coconut chips offer any health benefits?

The short answer, yes! Coconut chips are obviously derived from coconuts which are packed with nutrients such as fibre, healthy fats, iron, zinc, calcium, magnesium and manganese. Whilst specific research is yet to be conducted on coconut chips, coconut derived products such as coconut oil have been shown to have cardioprotective factors such as increasing HDL-c ( good cholesterol) when consumed with a healthy diet. However, conversely, excessive consumption of coconut derived products can increase LDL-C ( bad cholesterol) which may lead to increased risk of heart disease. This highlights the importance of consuming coconut chips in moderation, as they are not only delicious but also have a number of nutrients and health benefits. It is also important to note that coconut chips are vegan, gluten and keto diet friendly and therefore can be enjoyed by everyone.

Why you should choose coconut chips instead of potato chips

Potato chips are a popular snack, without a doubt; however, coconut chips may be a healthier and more guilt free alternative. Potato chips are generally packed with preservatives, additives, emulsifiers, sodium, and saturated fats which can be detrimental to our health. Whereas coconut chips are generally lower in sodium and tend to have fewer ingredients, making them a more suitable snack.

How can you include coconut chips in your diet?

Coconut chips are versatile, they are not only a great snacking option, but they can also be sprinkled as a topping onto your favourite smoothie bowl, granola, or oatmeal. You may be surprised to learn that coconut chips can also be sprinkled over your favourite salads, adding some sweetness. You may like to add some coconut chips onto your ice cream as well, just for that added flavour.

The final verdict

Overall, coconut chips can be a delicious, convenient, and guilt-free alternative to potato chips. Their nutritional benefits, when consumed in moderation and as part of a healthy diet, are another reason why adding coconut chips into your diet would be a great idea.
